Picket & Protest
This Friday, February 15th is the Iraq Moratorium, a national day of action against the Iraq War. As hundreds of student groups and community organizations oppose the war across the country, Macalester Students for a Democratic Society have made plans for two actions for anyone and everyone to be a part of.

First, a car caravan will be leaving from Macalester Street early in the morning at 7:15 AM to form a picket line in front of the local military recruitment office that borders the U of M campus before the offices open. As the motto for the national day of action is to "stop business as usual," all business in and out of the recruitment station will be mediated by our anti-war presence (people will have to cross the picket line, so to speak). Get yourself out of bed, and join the protest.

Second, there will be an action on campus in the form of a sit-in in the campus center lobby at noon. Those participating will be wearing black blindfolds and holding signs that say "stop business as usual and open your eyes to the war," as a visual and physical reminder to the Macalester community that even though normal life appears to continue on American campuses during this war, we refuse to allow such appearances to obscure our awareness of and opposition to military aggression in Iraq . Please participate--come to the campus center at noon to pick up a blindfold and sit-in for justice!

Martin Luther King Day Vigil for Peace
Brandywine Peace Community
After their Christmas Candlelight Vigil for Peace, on Moratorium Day #4, this month the Brandywine Peace Community will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Day of Nonviolent Resistance to the war and to Lockheed Martin, the world’s largest weapons corporation and the Iraq War’s chief profiteer, at their weapons complex in Valley Forge, PA.

The demonstration will include: bell-tolling for peace, reading names of Iraq war dead - U.S. and Iraqi - and the loudspeaker broadcast of excerpts of many of Dr. King’s sermons and speeches. There will also be poetry, music, and a litany built around Dr. King’s 1964 Nobel Peace Price speech.

Along the Goddard Boulevard sidewalk in front of Lockheed Martin, we will have wooden tombstones, combat boots, a large coffin, and a sign with the Lockheed Martin logo reading “We’re Making a Killing”. The group will also hold large
colorful banners reading: “Remember King’s Dream: Make War No More!”, “We Declare Peace”, and “Resist Lockheed Martin, the face of war-making today!”.

This will be the 31st straight year that the Brandywine Peace Community has begun the New Year with a demonstration at Lockheed Martin! [More info,_Contact,_Updates,_Comments_and_Reports]

BRING OUT THE DOGS!
Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS Austin), CodePink, Texas Labor Against the War, SDS-UT (Students for a Democratic Society at UT Austin), The Rag Blog
MDS Austin is sponsoring a uniquely Austin-weird opportunity for citizens to express
their disgust with U.S. Senator John Cornyn, whose tail-wagging support for the
administration's policies on the war, torture, and civil liberties and dogged defense of
President Bush's veto of affordable health care to millions of needy children has helped
to propel him to an approval rating lower than a weenie dog. “Corn Dog” – Bush’s own
nickname for Texas’ junior senator! – is the president’s ever-obedient lap dog.

This will not be just a demonstration: it will be spectacle! We are inviting progressive
groups to develop — through canine-related costume, music, and street theater — their
own distinctive messages about Cornyn’s flea-bitten record. We are asking people to
bring their dogs and/or to come costumed as dogs. It will be lively and colorful, but the
message will be as serious as a riled-up pit bull!

Peace Vigil
Rock River Peace Group
Vigil to Protest the Iraq War and plans to attack Iran.

"One of the reasons we vigil is to protest the myth that the surge in Iraq has worked," said Chuck Ogg. "In fact, the opposite is true. It has not created stability and security in Iraq, the Bush administration's stated goals. There is clear evidence that the recent drop in violence was due to other factors. We believe a political solution cannot not be forged until our troops leave. We are also concerned that Bush is attempting to provoke Iran, hoping to start yet another war--a debacle that could be even more violent and costly. That's why now more than ever we need to stand up and be heard to pressure Congress. We must bring our brave soldiers home now rather than lose yet more lives."

The vigil is part of the nation-wide Iraq Moratorium. [More info,_Contact,_Updates,_Comments_and_Reports]
