Living Graveyard
11/20/2007 Noon-1:00 PM
Oakland Federal Building, 1301 Clay Street, Oakland, CA US
Sponsored by Ecumenical Peace Institute; East Bay Coalition to Support Self-Rule for Iraqis, Berkeley Women in Black, Women for Peace
Participants lie on city sidewalk, covered with white sheets, to represent the dead of the Iraq war of occupation. Space is left to accomodate pedestrian and wheelchair traffic. Names of the dead are read. A gong sounded at intervals. Mat is recommended to soften the pavement. Poncho in case of rain to be worn under the sheet.
This is legal street theater to make visible the reality of the deaths caused by the war, representing the true human cost of the Iraq War -- the U.S. and allied dead and the untold thousands of Iraqis who have died in the conflict.
Giving out black ribbons for Iraq Moratorium.
