Peace North and Veterans for Peace Chapter 153

Just over 80 people turned out in Hayward, Wisconsin Friday afternoon to vigil for peace in observance of the Iraq Moratorium Day #4. That's in a town of about 2000, and up from 40 or so in November! The event was co-sponsored by Peace North and Veterans for Peace Chapter 153.

The crowd was lively, talkative and inspired to come again next month. There were longtime activists, first-time vigilers, young and old, veterans, and family members of servicemen and women.

Demonstrators held signs, flags, candles and crosses, waved to passersby, and enjoyed coffee, hot cider and cookies.

Though the mainstream media claims that the war has taken a back seat to the economy as the primary concern of the American people, Friday's event proved that people want an end to this war and are excited about an opportunity to show their opposition.

Following an article in our local Sawyer County Record, our event was well filmed and photographed. WOJB Radio’s Local Morning Edition host Eric Schubring did a live telephone call from the event and the newspaper sent a photographer.

The Superior Broadcast Network team was there to interview and gather information for creating a radio piece for Public Radio.

See you in January!

Here is a movie of the Solstice Moratorium Gathering in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Another bitterly cold Moratorium event in Hayward Wisconsin with temperatures of 2 below zero and windchills down to 12 below.

Yet 47 hardy souls endured the elements on behalf of Iraq Moratorium Day #6, and the cause of peace. With perhaps one million Iraqi citizens killed, almost 4,000 American military personnel suffering the same fate, and with countless hundreds of thousands wounded and displaced we figured it was the least we could do.

Let's all work to make Friday March 21st the strongest Moratorium Day showing to date, and let's put the Presidential candidates and Congress on notice that we want an end to this war! See you in March!!

It was the second largest turnout yet for Iraq Moratorium Day # 9 in Hayward, Wisconsin since the event started last November. Roughly 75 peace and anti-war supporters turned out to demand an end to this war, and to welcome Kathy Kelly to the north woods of Wisconsin.

We also demanded that St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and the St. Paul City Council grant the Republican National Convention march organizers the permit they’ve requested, rather than a permit for an alternate route.

Vigilers waved at motorists, leafleted passersby, held signs, had their pictures taken with Kathy, and spoke openly of their determination to return monthly until this war ends.

Later that evening 45 people came to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Hayward to listen to Kathy Kelly’s remarkable stories of her life, and of the incredible suffering of the Iraqi people at the hands of American sanctions and militarism. She spoke also of her upcoming “Witness Against War” walk from Chicago to St. Paul later this summer. After the presentation many people spoke to her about the possibility of joining Voices for Creative Nonviolence during portions of the walk.

We’re looking forward to June, when we’re still hoping, once again, to get our largest crowd to date!

In spite of the threat of high winds, large hail, torrential rains and dangerous lightning over 60 hardy, (foolish?) anti-war enthusiasts came out for Iraq Moratorium Day #10 in Hayward WI.

Though the annual Hayward Musky Fest traffic and parking challenges were daunting, we were able to secure a spot in the downtown parking lot for the Duluth/Superior Veterans for Peace Chapter 80 "Peace Float", and the huge sign it displays.

For a full 2 hours many hundreds or even thousands of tourists got a chance to see the 20 ft long and 7 foot high sign demanding an end to war.

Also in attendance was democratic candidate for Wisconsin's 73rd district assembly seat, Nick Milroy.

To top it off WOJB Public Affairs director Eric Schubring did a live broadcast of the event that included interviews with Milroy, and Vets for Peace Chapter 80's Peter Edmunds, caretaker of the peace float.

All in all we had an empowering and invigorating time. On to July!

Almost 40 people turned out for Iraq Moratorium day #11 in Hayward Wisconsin. The event, sponsored by Peace North and Veterans for Peace Chapter 153, featured a "No War With Iran" theme, which was called for by the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice, which is an affiliate of Untied for Peace and Justice.

In spite of a busy summer schedule people continue to turn out for public displays of opposition to the war in Iraq, and now a possible war in Iran. Once again motorists passing by stopped to express their appreciation and to join us for a few minutes while on their way home from work. The American people want and end to this war, so let's keep the pressure on in August!
