Dance party against the War! Join DC Students for a Democratic Society for an Iraq Moratorium action.
Let's drop beats (not bombs) and take back the streets for peace. The dancing will start at Franklin Park and continue throughout the K St area, visiting the offices of war profiteers along the way. Wear your most outrageous party clothes and be loud!
Meet at 4:30 p.m. at Franklin Park, 14th & K NW; Disco starts at 5:00pm
The DC SDS-initiated Street Party called Funk the War Disco drew around 100 fired-up students who boogied into K St. and Connecticut Ave at the height of rush hour, blocking traffic and closing War Profiteer's Row to cars for quite a while.
While many previous protests had found the 14th St Recruiting Center "closed" at 5 PM, Funk the War found them open, and the door unlocked at nearer to 6 PM and promptly exploited the situation by demonstrating to them first hand how an occupying force behaves.
Half the demonstrators stormed inside creating a loud commotion, while outnumbered cops watched. Recruiters finally managed to get protesters to leave--but not before literature and full-body length cardboard displays in the street window area were destroyed. In addition, hundreds more "Funk the War" stickers were plastered all over just about everything that would take them. By the time everyone was out it looked like a tornado had swept through the lobby.
One recruiter tried to grab an activist but found himself overpowered by SDS's superior strength and numbers and had no choice but to give up!
The Moratorium Day #6 Disco, the second such Third Friday action closed out by going after nearby DC GOP headquarters, but that door had been locked and there were too many cops around to break it down.
