Iraq Moratorium: Cornwall Edition
02/15/2008 7 PM United Church of Christ parish house, , Cornwall, CT US Sponsored by After our successful potluck for Moratorium Day #5, we are returning to the United Church of Christ, this time for a free concert of anti-war songs, old and new, by female singer/songwriters.
As usual we will be hitting businesses and offices in Cornwall and neighboring towns with posters promoting the Iraq Moratorium.
PermaLink: http://iraqmoratorium.org/events/listings/6/663.html Reports, Updates, Comments Cornwall went from a feast, January's pot luck supper for Moratorium Day #5, to a feast for the ears. One of our core group, Karl Saliter, put together a great group of women performers in a program called "Please Just Listen: Songs of Peace and Protest" at the United Church of Christ in Cornwall Plains. The music was a true treat for everyone lucky enough to attend. Louise Lindenmeyr, Rachel Gall, Bibi Farber, and Joanne Delcarpine made up the bill. Charlie Keil and Mikaela Ware added their drumming and guitar.
Rachel honored Iraqi culture by playing a "New England Version" of an Iraqi piece on her violin. The crowd thought it was great, and we learned that Iraqi youth can be seen playing Metallica numbers on traditional instruments on YouTube. Joanne's cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" was moving, and she broke new ground with a percussion-based version on the Grateful Dead's "Throwing Stones."
Bibi arrived from New York with thirty seconds to spare and fairly shone with original music written for the event. One, written for a friend who had committed suicide while stationed in Iraq, was incredibly powerful.
Louise performed with what I can only call a combination of grace and professionalism, and wrapped up the evening by leading the group in "Knocking on Heaven's Door."
