Iraq Moratorium: Cornwall Edition
Our Iraq Moratorium hit the streets for the first time--the Green in Cornwall Bridge at the junction of Route 7 and Route 4 to be exact.

This was where weekly Saturday morning vigils took place for several years after the invasion of Iraq until they dwindled out. When we took up the Moratorium in Cornwall last fall, we didn't want to just do vigils--or just do the same anything--every month. Since then we've had speakers, a concert, a film showing, a potluck, a letter writing session and more.

Our first vigil was quite a success. Despite probably a dozen IM stalwarts being pulled away by various June wedding duties, over 30 people showed up for a lively and colorful roadside protest, ranging from young kids through middle schoolers and folks who came straight from winding up their workweek right on up to seniors. Though many had been to previous local Moratorium events, others were new, like my friend Peggy who told me, "This is the first time I've ever done anything like this."

A particularly energizing feature of the vigil was a horn trio organized and led by Charlie Kiel from nearby Lakeville. Two trombones and a sax (backed by percussion from the other participants) played an extended riff, propelling a simple moving chant for peace which those assembled took up together. It kept spirits high the whole hour.

So did the overwhelmingly positive response from people driving by, with at least one local resident, Suzanne, who hadn't heard about the doings on the Green in advance pulling her car over and jumping aboard for the rest of the vigil.
