Observe Moratorium Day By Yourself!

Call Your Representative and Both Senators!

One of the most important actions you can take on this Moratorium Day is to contact your Senators and Representative and tell them to bring the troops home. Right now Congress is paralyzed. They have not given the President the next $200 billion for the war, but they haven't stopped it either. This vote is coming! Popular pressure has created a significant group of antiwar legislators. There aren't enough of them.

Let your elected official know that as a constituent you are paying close attention to their vote. They have the power to bring the troops home in a safe and orderly fashion. You expect them to use it.

And keep doing it. Your first call may not be the one that changes your members' minds, but a growing storm front of calls and letters can uproot some of the most hard-core war supporters, to say nothing of getting the ones who act like weather-vanes pointing the right way.

  • If you aren't sure who your Representative and Senators are, it is easy to find out by clicking here.
  • You can reach the office of any member of Congress by calling the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121. Ask to be connected to the office you want to speak to.
  • When you are connected, ask to speak to the staff person who works on Iraq policy for the Representative or Senator. If the Iraq staff person is out of the office, you can leave your message with the receptionist.
  • Tell them what you think they should be doing in clear simple terms. For instance:

I want my Representative (or Senator) to refuse to continue funding the Iraq war and instead vote only to fund a safe and orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops and contractors.

    or

I want my Representative (or Senator) to vote to bring all U.S. troops and contractors home from Iraq on an immediate timeline.

You do not need to explain your position or have a discussion with the staff person (unless you want to). The key to the call is to register your opinion about ending the war. Ask them to take down your name and address and ask that the Representative (or Senator) keep you informed about their efforts to end the war in Iraq. Let them know you have your eye on them!
